Engineering - Alumawood Lattice, Pergolas, Arbors Print E-mail

In some instances your local area may require an engineered set of plans in order to approve the installation of your awning. Every Rontimco awning has been fully engineered to the highest standards of materials quality and structural integrity. A set of the actual engineering reports is available should you need them.  The engineering for our patio cover and awning kits is based off of Amerimax Engineering.  If a permit is being pulled it is a good idea to have the engineering and plans approved before you purchase.  Rontimco is not responsible for permit or associated information.

Lattice Structures may be attached to a building or be freestanding.  Prices will vary depending on this and other factors.

SlopeThe minimum slope requirement is 1/2 inch per foot.
Wind LoadMost kits will be rated to a 90 wind load but we can accomodate up to a 110 mph. Kits can be engineered for an exposure B or C area.  Exposure B refers to urban or suburban areas, wooded areas, or other terrain with numerous closely spaced obstruction having the size of
single-family dwellings or larger.
Snow LoadSnow loads are given in pounds per square foot and range from 10 to 60 PSF.   This measurement is also referred to as live load.  In most cases even light snow areas will begin at a 20lb load.  A 10lb load is for areas that receive no snow. Lattices do have a snow load.
Post SpacingThe max post spacing is indicated for each kit in the description.  The side overhang (from post to end of header) cannot exceed 25% of the actual post spacing.
LengthThere is no maximum for length.  Length will be as selected in 1 foot increments.  This is the length of the lattice and header.
HeightThis is the distance from the ground to the bottom of the header. In other words this is the post height.
ProjectionThe distance from the house to the end of the rafters or in the case of a free standing, the distance from the end of the rafters to the end of the rafters.
Clear SpanThe distance from the house to the Header beam or in the case of a free standing, the distance from Header beam to Header beam.
OverhangThe distance from the 3x8 inch Header to the end of the Rafters.

SUPPORT BEAM AND HEADER TYPES

3x8 inch Alumawood Header BeamThis header will be supported by the posts.  The rafters will hang over the beam. This beam comes with all kits.
3x8 inch Steel C BeamIf selected this beam will slide into the 3x8 inch Alumawood Header Beam and be concealed from each end with end caps.  This beam is constructed of 12 gauge steel and when used with posts into poured footings, is capable of larger snow loads and post spacing.  This Beam comes in stock lengths or 20 or 24 feet and may need to be trimmed to fit your needs.

POST TYPE AND GROUND ATTACHMENT

Concrete Slab attachmentsAwnings that will be attached to a concrete slab will come with Aluminum Cloverleaf posts inserts that are 3 inches by 3 inches and are 0.040 inches thick.  They will slide into the Alumawood post to provide extra strength.  All hardware and brackets are included for this type of mounting.  Remember to keep several inches away from the edge of your slab to avoid cracking your concrete.
Wood deck attachmentAwnings that will be attached to a wood deck will come with Aluminum Cloverleaf posts inserts that are 3 inches by 3 inches and are 0.040 inches thick.  They will slide into the Alumawood post to provide extra strength. The brackets for a wood deck attachment will be included but the Lag screws or bolts will not be included.  Please see Wood Deck Attachment Engineering for appropriate lag screw and bolt descriptions.
Footing AttachmentsFootings must be poured with a Cloverleaf post being embedded into the concrete.  For this reason your quote will indicate a post size that is 2 feet longer than the awning height.  This extra 2 feet on the cloverleaf post is intended to be used in the footing.  The Alumawood post will slide over the Cloverleaf post.  The Alumawood post will not be embedded into the concrete – only the Cloverleaf post. The Cloverleaf post is 3 inches by 3 inches and constructed of 0.041 inch thick steel.  No brackets or bolts are needed for the post to footing attachment.  Customers must provide the concrete and steel bar for reinforcement for each footing.  Each quote with a footing attachment will indicate a footer size.  This amount should be cubed for each footing.  Please see Footing Engineering for footing details on post depth and steel bar reinforcement.

*All freestanding Structure require a Poured Footing.

HOUSE ATTACHMENT TYPE

Ledger BoardEngineering requires 2 inch thick ledger boards.  For most places a 2x6 or a 2x8 is accepted.  Use # 2 Douglas fir or better. Customers are responsible for the ledger board and its attachment to the house.  See Ledger Engineering for details.  A Ledger Board Cover does not come with this kit but can be purchased separately as an accessory.  If ordered the Ledger Boar Cover is to be used as a cover only and not the actual ledger board.  Ledger Board Covers are 2 inch by 6-1/2inches and should be filled with the actual ledger board.  Most contractor use plywood to fill the remaining void.  Ledger Board covers also use the Alumawood cedar embossed texture and will come matching the color selected.  The rafters will attach to the ledger board individually using hidden U channel braces, also known as Rafter Hanger Brackets. When a ledger board attachment is selected, 2 inch SMS screws will be sent to attach the hangers.
Eave AttachmentEave attachments require a 2 inch wide fascia.  The fascia should be reinforced using Simpson bracket A34 on the back of the fascia to the side of the rafter.  Eaves are allowed a certain amount of over hang per snow load and projection.  See Eave Engineering for details.  The rafters will attach to the fascia individually using hidden U channel braces, also known as Rafter Hanger Brackets. When an eave attachment is selected, 2 inch SMS screws will be sent to attach the hangers.
